edjugorje, 27 km away from Mostar, became one of the most famous and most visited places of Catholic pilgrims since a group of children witnessed the appearance of the Virgin Mary on June 24, 1981, near the village of Podbrdo, in the place called “Apparitions Hill” .
It is the main spiritual centre in the region and the second largest Catholic pilgrimage sanctuary in the world, with the population of about 5,000.

Thanks to Our Lady’s apparitions, Medjugorje has become the place of gathering for pilgrims from all over the world and thus one of the world’s largest prayer centres. Countless testimonies of pilgrims tell us how they found faith and peace in this place.
According to some estimates, over the past years, there were more than thirty million pilgrims, several hundred bishops and thousands of priests from all continents visiting Medjugorje since Our Lady’s apparitions. 1. The Church of St. James
The centre of gathering in the Queen of Peace sanctuary, as the Medjugorje sanctuary is officially called, is St. James’s Church in the centre of the town. The Church of St. James, built in 1969, is the centre of various religious events, and behind it is the pathway leading to the Resurrection of the Saviour, a statue from which the sacred water falls continuously in small drops.
2. Brdo Križevac
Križevac is a hill above Medjugorje (520 m), where the parishioners, on March 15, 1934, erected an 8.56 m high reinforced concrete cross, which states: “”To Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of the human race, as a sign of our faith, love and hope, and in the name of the 1900 Anniversary of the Passion of Jesus».
3. Apparition Hill
At the very place of the apparitions, in honour of the 20th anniversary, the statue of the Queen of Peace was made according to the model of the one located in front of the parish church (the work of Dina Felicia).
Visiting the Apparition Hill for Pilgrims is a meeting with Our Lady through personal prayer and prayer of the Rosary.
4. Herceg etno village of Medjugorje
Herceg etno village Medjugorje is a hotel-tourist complex opened in late 2008, spreading over five acres of land where over 50 stone buildings were built. The village emerged from stone and made of stone, just a few kilometers from the famous sanctuary of Medjugorje, can rightly be called the miracle of the Herzegovinian region. Herceg is a timeless category, a place where, beyond the present time, one forgets the bustle of everyday life.
5. The Garden of St. Francis
Garden of St. Francis, a multiacre forest in the north-western part of the Mother’s village. The rocky landscape, overgrown with pine forests, with a patient work of refinement and cleansing, has become a beautiful, natural space for gathering and recreation, prayer and upbringing. There are two artificial ponds in it, several children’s recreational and didactic aids, and stylized characters from children’s stories.
