The History of Podaca

“Old Podaca is raised on the hill, on the slopes of Biokovo, above the sea shore. The folk etymology interprets its name by the fact that Podaca was raised on the “”floor” (old Croatian “podi” or “poci”), and thus the name of this old coastal village.
The settlement is located in a very convenient place, suitable for defence and is dominated by “”KULA”” (the Tower) from the Venetian-Ottoman period. “Kula” was rebuilt in the 17th century during the defence from the Ottoman conquest and is to this day preserved at the entrance to the old village. It is also known from the clash of local people with the Ottomans in the Kandian War, described in the works of the famous Croatian writer A.K.Mioši?.

From the Middle Ages, the old-Croatian Church of St. John was preserved in the upper village (Gornja Podaca), built by the noblemen Kacic. At the entrance to the church there is a tombstone with the names of Ka?i?, and nearby is a medieval tombstone called ste?ak. The church has become the church of the noble family of Kacic and is considered one of the most important pre-Romanesque churches in Dalmatia. The evidence of this period is a piece of the wall in which a stone capital from the Middle Ages was found, similar to the capitals of our old Croatian churches.

In 1492 the church of St Stephan was built not far from the church of St. John. In the 18th century it was brought down, so as to give a way to the nowadays church built in 1772. After the earthquake of 1962 the Church of Our Lady of Prayer was built by the sea.

Zaostrog

Zaostrog is a tourist resort on the Makarska Riviera, about 35 km from Makarska.
A favorite tourist destination, primarily because of its beautiful sandy and pebble beaches, which are accompanied by pine trees, restaurants and tourist facilities.

The most famous cultural, religious and educational centre of the Upper Makarska Riviera is the Franciscan monastery of St. Mary in Zaostrog. The monastery has a rich library with about 20,000 books and an archival fund. Within the monastery museum is an ethnological collection, peasant furniture and tools, and various pieces of Croatian folk costumes. The collection is registered in the Register of Cultural Monuments under the protection of the state. In the monastery garden there is a botanical garden planted with over 250 plants. Today, the Zaostrog tourist resort on the Makarska Riviera is entirely focused on the development of tourism. About 350 people live in Zaostrog today and are mainly engaged in catering and tourism.
