The old city core<br \/>\nThe Old Town was once completely girded by a high defense wall with towers, and a long time of its history it was connected to the mainland with a mobile bridge. The Old Town can be accessed through two entrances \u2013 the Mainland Gate on the south and the Sea Gate on the west. The walk along Kor?ula is a special experience.<\/p>\n<p>2. St. Mark&#8217;s Cathedral<br \/>\nSt. Mark Cathedral is the center of religious life and one of the most important and beautiful monuments in the old town of Korcula. It was erected in the 15th century on the site of the 13th century Romanesque church. It was built by local craftsmen well known all the way from Dubrovnik to Venice.<\/p>\n<p>3. The House of Marco Polo<br \/>\nIn the centre of Old Town, north of St. Mark\u2019s Cathedral, there is a house belonging to the Polo family and believed to have been the birthplace of the famous merchant, world traveler and travel writer Marco Polo.<br \/>\nIn 1298 he was captured in the naval battle between Genoa and Venice, which took place in front of Korcula. He was then taken to Genoa and thrown into prison.<\/p>\n<p>4. City Museum of Korcula<br \/>\nThe Kor?ula City Museum is located in the Gabrielis palace, a representative example of residential architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries, on the central square of the old town centre, embellishing it with its decorative stone facade, ornated with a balcony and coats of arms of the Gabrielis family. Antuna<br \/>\nFrom the town of Korcula, the road to the sea continues to the Glavica of St. Anthony, where this part of the city got its name: St. Anthony.<br \/>\nAt the top of Glavica, which is led by 101 stone stairs and tree-lined cypress, there is the church of St. Anthony and hermitage dating from 1420, with the reliefs of St. Anthony of Padua and St. Anthony the Hermit.<\/p>\n<p>EVENTS:<br \/>\nIn the summer months, music festivals, Croatian theatre performances, and performances of friendly folklore groups from Croatia and the world are held in all places, especially in the bigger ones. There are also numerous sports events, especially the water polo competitions in Korcula.
